VTD — Seasonal & Regional Traffic

(REQUIRED: any single “Vanilla+ time zones” mod)

OUTLINE

VTD uses real-world traffic data to give ATS different traffic patterns by season, state, and city.

It also adjusts AI driving behavior to reflect seasonal conditions.

Unlike ordinary traffic density mods, VTD works as an addon to them instead.

You can expect denser traffic in California and lighter traffic in Nevada. Noticeable differences can also be found between Chicago and Springfield in Illinois, or between Houston and Lubbock in Texas—among many other regions.

If you want more realistic American traffic patterns and AI behavior—not simply heavier traffic and lifeless drivers—VTD is the choice for you.

FEATURES

Traffic patterns vary across states and cities based on the latest SPRING traffic data.

March – May 2026

AI driving behavior is adjusted to reflect the SPRING season.

Changes include:
- Overall safety and patience
- Driving-speed variation
- Lane-change distance and duration
- Following distance while driving and idling
- Reflexes and reactions, including smoother braking for escоrt vehicles
- Accident response and hazard awareness

SCOPE

Vanilla map area

VTD has limited compatibility with ProMods and other map mods.
Regional traffic works in areas covered by the vanilla map, even if parts have been edited or reworked.
However, since city regions were mapped out based on the vanilla map, there may be some inconsistencies when using map combos.
Areas outside the vanilla map are not yet supported.

Convoy: Non-optional

Please check the images at the top of this page for the correct load order and other requirements.

INCOMPATIBLE

Placing them at a higher priority will prevent my mod from working; you need to choose either mine or others.

Why doesn't my traffic seem to vary at all, with or without VTD?

It's mainly because you didn't use it along with my one of my PTZ mods.

Why is the regional traffic feature split into two separate mods?

This would improve my workflow and give you with more flexibility for better immersion (e.g. when to switch time zones).

These regional data are stored in country definition files, which are the same for time zones.

If I were to merge them into one mod, the SPRING and FALL editions would each need to be split into two mods just for the sake of different time zones, even though they're exactly the same otherwise.

It sounds even more complicated, doesn't it?

To my knowledge, no one has ever done regional traffic because of the game mechanic limitations. Is this a hoax?

No — the regional traffic density feature is a brand-new variation system that SCS introduced with the Nordic Horizons DLC in ETS2, and it only exists there.

All I did was make good use of it.

That's also the reason why it doesn't conflict with any past traffic density mods, because they work independently.

I feel like the traffic is either too sparse or too heavy all the time. How can I resolve this?

You can first try adjusting the “g_traffic” value to see if it's about right for you.

If still not, the issue is likely with your traffic density mod.

Why? Because VTD only handles the overall traffic intensity between areas, not how much traffic flows throughout the day.

“Real life traffic density” by kworey has always been a solid choice for me as it is the most straightforward yet detailed. I have also used it to test VTD for countless hours.

Essentially, VTD cannot really make your experience better if your traffic density mod is already lacking the desired realism.

Could you explain the differences between Al drivers in different seasons?

Put simply, SUMMER drivers has the least patience and safety, while WINTER drivers has the most. SPRING and FALL drivers lie between them.

However, as mentioned in the feature description, I changed more than just that.

It might not be perfect, so I'd really love to hear your feedback!

Do you plan to support ProMods and other map mods?

I might do, but not any time soon.

The part of making VTD that took the most physical effort was selecting hundreds of metropolitan and other areas on the map one by one, and then tweaking them, just to get the best possible results for the regional traffic feature.

Supporting another map mod means repeating that entire process from scratch.

Even so, you're more than welcome to express your interest and kind support if there are more players who'd love to take their trucking experience to the next level with VTD.

Seeing a clear demand always gives me a great reason to look into it!
